Happy National ASL Day!

To celebrate, we would like to share two wonderful apps for learning conversational sign language. The first app we would like to share is Marlee Signs. The app is from Marlee Matlin, an Academy Award winning actress and author. Her most recent work is the role of Melody Bledsoe in the ABC show “Switched at Birth”. Marlee Signs goes through basic signs such as the full alphabet and the numbers 0-9, as well as a few basic phrases. It gives video and photos to break down the hand positioning and movement. The app is free, and has a 4/5 star rating, with the most common complaints being that it does not have sound, and that it only goes through the basics of sign language. The app can be found at https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/marlee-signs/id566054855?mt=8.

The second app we would like to share is the ASL app. This app offers more complex conversational signs than the previous one, and is created by a group of dedicate members of the Deaf community. The app has free starter packs for signs such as the ones for colors and handshape exercises, but does include in-app purchases to learn additional phrases including ones related to cooking. The app has a 4.5/5 star rating, with minor bug issues and the fact that it includes in-app purchases bringing the rating down. The official site for the app is http://theaslapp.com/#about.

Sign language is such a great way to help your infant begin to learn language and communication skills. It is also a great communication tool for individuals with special needs. We love sign language here at All Care!
