What is Interoception and Why Does it Matter to My Child?

Interoception is our ability to notice and understand body signals - like hunger, thirst, needing the bathroom, or feeling overwhelmed. It’s often called our “body awareness” sense.

Strong interoception skills help kids:

  • Recognize when they’re hungry or tired

  • Notice when they need a break

  • Identify feelings before they escalate

  • Improve emotional regulation

  • Build independence in daily routines

When interoception is challenging, children may struggle with meltdowns, accidents, or difficulty explaining how they feel.

Occupational therapy supports children by:

  • Teaching body signal awareness

  • Connecting physical sensations to emotions

  • Practicing regulation strategies

  • Using visuals and movement-based activities

  • Building independence in self-care routines

Helping kids understand their bodies builds confidence, regulation, and lifelong self-awareness.
