Interoception is our ability to notice and understand body signals - like hunger, thirst, needing the bathroom, or feeling overwhelmed. It’s often called our “body awareness” sense.

Strong interoception skills help kids:
Recognize when they’re hungry or tired
Notice when they need a break
Identify feelings before they escalate
Improve emotional regulation
Build independence in daily routines
When interoception is challenging, children may struggle with meltdowns, accidents, or difficulty explaining how they feel.
Occupational therapy supports children by:
Teaching body signal awareness
Connecting physical sensations to emotions
Practicing regulation strategies
Using visuals and movement-based activities
Building independence in self-care routines
Helping kids understand their bodies builds confidence, regulation, and lifelong self-awareness.
