Early Movement of the Arms and Hands Helps Recovery

After an illness, injury, surgery, or a long hospital stay, it's common for the arms and hands to become weak or stiff. Starting gentle movement early—as recommended by a healthcare provider—can help people regain strength, prevent stiffness, and make everyday tasks easier.

Using our arms and hands is essential for daily activities like getting dressed, brushing our teeth, eating, bathing, writing, cooking, and returning to work or school. Occupational therapists help people practice these everyday tasks during therapy. For example, someone might practice reaching for a hairbrush, picking up household items, or using their weaker arm while getting dressed. Practicing real-life activities helps people see how therapy relates to their everyday lives.

Early movement can also improve confidence. As people notice they can do more on their own, they often feel more motivated to continue working toward their recovery goals.

Research supports the benefits of beginning occupational therapy early. One study found that people who started therapy sooner showed better improvements in arm and hand function than those who delayed treatment.

Recovery looks different for everyone, but beginning safe movement as early as possible can help people return to the activities that matter most. Working with an occupational therapist can provide the guidance and support needed to safely regain independence.
